STILL IMAGE

Original portraits form the first session working ion the photography studios.
This photo is taken before working with the light metres and before we adjusted brightness to improve exposure upon the subject.

We were given light metres upon introduction to the photography studios which enabled us to measure the amount of light exposure in a photograph.
Typically light metres will be fitted with digital or analog electronic circuits aiding photographers in gauging which Sutter speed and which f-number should be used for each picture.

PHOTOS TAKEN AFTER

Evidently after spending some time playing about with brightness and both over and underexposing the subjects we found the right balance and began to produce better and more clear and even pictures.

READING

I enjoyed reading up on the photography of Richard Avedon who introduced the idea to me of capturing people during everyday, blue collar workers are good subjects as they emit a sense of reality that other subjects might not given the idea that one may be covered in mud and dirty as the result of a hard day's graft.

PHOTOGRAPHERS I RESEARCHED ...

Gunner Stahl

Photographer to the stars

The 24 year old from Atlanta is best known for breaking through as one of the most popular photographers of rappers and singers in recent years. He's been able to manoeuvre and gain clout with his iconic pictures taken using 35mm film at a time when we have seen a renaissance of young creative people favouring using analog forms of film as apposed to newer digital forms.

He uses his Instagram account which clocks in currently at 380k followers in order to display his work. The platform is widely responsible for propelling Gunner into the mainstream with the site allowing other celebrities and artists find out about his work before hiring him for even more.
Constantly he uploads pictures of the young, rich and famous.

He states that he dislikes extremely staged photos, he enjoys that shooting with film means that you don't know what images you'll get until they are developed. He aims to capture the feeling of the moment as much as possible which is evident in the pictures on his Instagram which are filled with character.

Close-up of rapper Lil Uzi Vert flexing whilst holding on ice lolly.
The picture displays his playful nature well with his actions and facial expressions painting a picture.
Portrait of Kendrick Lamar performing.
The mid-shot captures him holding a microphone, evidently he is sweating doing what he does best, depicting his hard-working personality.
A Close-up of Rich Brian (Rich Chigga).
The photo is outside which is unlike most of Gunner's pictures which are inside and unnaturally lit. Brian's facial expression alone gives us an insight into what it is like to be around him.
A candid picture of Lana Del Rey playing with a fidget spinner taken from a slightly higher angle.

Close-up picture of rap artist Wiz Khalifa smoking a blunt.
The object and accessories highlight who he is through the picture, a chilled, laid back person.

The simple photography catches character types and personality traits easily without being extremely staged, I feel Gunner is extremely affective at 'capturing the real' in a photo and due to this it is no surprise where he is vision has taken him.

Dexter Navy

The English cinematographer and photographer is well known for his work with the a$ap mob. He has credits for some of the most experimental and eye-catching contemporary music videos in recent times.

A$AP ROCKY - L$D

A$AP MOB - MONEY MAN

A$AP ROCKY - A$AP FOREVER

A great deal of his photography is taken mid-shoots and revolves around psychedelic themes.

Dexter is seen in this picture capturing the cinematographer filming the female subject in the video for L$D by A$ap Rocky.
The green and yellows with light beaming down on them reflects onto walls and against the mirror for a misty psychedelic atmosphere which is present in Dexter's stills and especially in his video work.

Many of his stills feature fluorescent colours like the yellow seen in this and the picture above. The colours make for an eye-catching picture and draws the eye to more than just the central figure in each picture.

This picture featuring rappers Skepta and A$AP Rocky is taken during the filming of music video and short film Money Man.

I like the way how there is three overlapping figures in this picture all positioned in separate frames of the portrait. The still is complex, there is several things happening. We are first met by the gaze of Skepta who is looking directly at the camera, his face is expressionless and cold. The black and white filter makes for an iconic looking ageless photo. The fact that the subjects are in a vehicle and we are looking in from the outside is filmic and this is heighten by the person in the background who we only see part of his body suggesting he is about to come into shot and something further is about to happen. Theres many layers ton this picture which I like as they aren't all initially apparent.

RICHARD AVEDON

Richard Avedon is a 20th century American artist from New York, he started taking pictures using his family camera the Bolex Box Brownie and from then on his interest in photography continued to grow.

He is distinguished for his large prints with some measuring up to 3 metres in height, he is famous for his photography of Western Americans including drifters, miners and cowboys.
Avedon’s career was propelled to new heights when he focused on everyday working class subjects such as miners soiled in their work clothes, housewives, farmers and drifters on larger-than-life prints, instead of the more traditional pictures focusing upon noted public figures such as celebrities.

Photos of artist Andy Warhol and Marilyn Monroe.
I notice his transition of pictures going from celebrities to normal working people, he tries to capture whole body portraits of the normal people. This is in order no doubt to show that one has spent the whole day working a blue collar job, it adds so much more than just the expression upon the face of the subject.

His photos below of the working class shows tiredness and dirt upon the faces and clothing of the subjects. I like his photography as it displays the real. Although not candid as the subjects are prepared for the photo it still shoes real people in everyday uniform, real people no filter the way they look at the end of everyday or during ones day. His photography is very unapologetic in style and I believe that is why he is so notable and has been so successful in his career.
